FAQ

Why should I choose Crabtree's School of Motoring for my driving lessons?

There are many driving instructors in the local area and it's very difficult to know which one to choose in such a highly competitive field. Just bear in mind that picking the cheapest is not always the best option. Here are some reasons why I think you'll be glad you chose me.

  • Reputation: I rely on word of mouth for much of my business and my pupils tend to recommend me to others.
  • Patience: I adopt a friendly and relaxed teaching manner and my lessons are structured to each individual pupil to meet their needs.
  • Contact: My landline (01462 732312), will always be answered ,so no annoying answering machines.

What's the procedure for my first lesson?

I'll pick you up from your chosen location and will firstly check your driving licence and then ask you to read a car number plate at a distance of approximately 21.5 Metres. If everything is in order, I'll then drive us to a quiet location to begin your tuition. By the end of the first lesson, you'll have learned the preparation for safe driving and how to move off and stop safely. You may also have gained some experience of general driving.

How many driving lessons will I need?

It's very difficult to be exact, as each pupil is different and everyone learns at a different pace but on average, my  pupils tend to take 25 to 45 hours to reach test standard. Some may require less.

Some pupils may have had previous experience or may also be practicing their driving outside lesson times with a parent or friend. These pupils are likely to require less lessons.

When should I book my Theory and Practical Tests?

You must pass your theory test before you can apply for your practical test . It is best to start studying for your theory test as soon as you start driving lessons. You'll find you become more confident with your practical driving if you've given plenty of time to learn your theory. The waiting list for theory tests is usually 2 to 4 weeks so you should book your theory test for roughly 6 to 8 weeks from the start of your lessons. I will discuss the best time to book your practical test once we have started your lessons.

Remember, test dates can always be moved back if you aren't ready, or forwards if you're making better progress than expected. I'll be happy to book the tests on your behalf.

Where will I take my tests?

Your Theory Test will be taken in Southgate House Stevenage and our local Practical Test centres are in Stevenage and Letchworth.

Do you recommend any products to assist with the theory test?

Reading the Highway Code is the most important source of material.

There are also many CD ROMs and DVDs on the market which can also help. I will discuss this with you on your first lesson.

Whose car do I use for the practical test?

My car will be made available for your test once we are both satisfied that you've reached the standard required to take the test.

What is your pass rate?

According to the DSA, the national average pass rate for passing a practical driving test is between 40% and 60%. You stand a better chance if you've had 40+ lessons and/or practical experience with a parent or other driver.

My 1st time pass rate is between 75% and 85%

Why do you not give discount for Block Booking Lessons?

Discount for Block Bookings penalises those who cannot afford to pay for lots of lessons in advance. I have decided to have one competitive hourly rate for everyone, with the first lesson (for novices) being two hours for the price of one hour.

Do you give automatic lessons?

My instructing car is a manual car, although I can give automatic lessons in your own car under certain circumstances.

Do you do intensive courses?

I can do semi-intensive courses (5 to 10 hrs a week) depending on availability.
